Gary Szymanski
March 3 – April 23, 2011
TransVagrant and Warschaw Gallery are pleased to present Sticks and Stones . . Recent Paintings by Gary Szymanski.
Regarded as an eminent practitioner of reductivist abstraction, Szymanski’s work is modest in scale and meticulously crafted. Quiet to the edge of anonymity and bearing no trace of the autographic, his sophisticated polychrome works mine the inherent potential of manipulated geometries.
In Sticks and Stones . . . Szymanski breaks the silence of his geometric pursuits by incorporating selected text pieces, which have been a parallel concern of the artist all along. Seldom exhibited, the text works are simultaneously engaged and detached, referencing the current controversy surrounding inflammatory political rhetoric, its media exploitation and reception. Dispassionately rendered in black and white, these austere works function as thoughts made material; as words alone, autonomous and devoid of authorship.
Gary Szymanski’s work has been exhibited widely throughout California, including Heather Marx Gallery in San Francisco, and Double Vision and Acuna Hansen Galleries in Los Angeles.
